Utilize NSSF mid-term funds into meaningful development ventures - Owere

KAMPALA - The Chairman General of National Trade Union (NOTU), Usher Owere, has appealed to workers to utilize the mid-term funds from National Social Security Fund (NSSF) into meaningful developmental ventures. 

“As workers, we are grateful to President Yoweri Museveni for signing the NSSF bill to become a law whereby members are ensured of creating value out of their savings to earn a living during their retirement,” Owere said.

Owere, who also doubles as the chairman of Amalgamated Transport Union said he was grateful to the government for considering workers to access their NSSF fund before retirement.

Owere made the remarks during the closing of 'Tukolerewamu Craft Development Association' annual exhibition at Railway gardens in Kampala on December 23, 2022.

He said the informal sector should be empowered so that they support each other.

He said they had acquired 12 acres of land in Wakiso to put up a training centre to skill entrepreneurs.

“In this training facility, workers will be skilled in making high quality standard items that will attract large orders as they compete in the global market,” he said.

Joyce Munyanga, the councillor for people with disabilities Namugongo parish Wakiso district said she was grateful for the government to recognize people with disabilities.

A board member of the association, George Kivumbi, appealed to the government to publicize the benefits of the Africa Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) to people in the informal sector.

Kivumbi appealed to the government to change the mindset of Ugandans who prefer foreign products instead of local ones.

“Tourists who visit Uganda buy Ugandan products because they are of high quality, therefore, let us promote our products to dominate the market place," he said.
