A huge crowd of supporters turned up at Apuuton Primary School grounds, Katakwi town council to cheer on their teams at the finals of the Alupo Cup tournament.

The tournament organised by the Vice-President, Jessica Alupo, and a Woman Member of Parliament Katakwi district saw Usuk emerging winner of the competition after crushing Katakwi town council 5 - 4 in a penalty shootout after a 1-1 draw in 90 minutes.

A four-week challenge that had registered 131 teams from 16 sub-counties and four town councils was organised to foster unity amongst the youth in the area.

Usuk Town Council FC coach James Alomu attributed Usuk’s victory to teamwork exhibited by players, supporters, and management.

"I knew from the onset that the first edition of the Alupo Cup was going to Usuk, due to the reason that every stakeholder worked hard for the success,” Alomu said.

Desmond Emer Coach of Katakwi Town Council, attributed his team's disappointment to bad luck.

"My players had tried their best to keep the ball in all the two halves, but at the end of the day, we lost it,” said Omer.

While closing the ceremony, Alupo encouraged locals to embrace sports as one way to enhance physical fitness.

“Sports is good for maintaining physical fitness, talent development, career development, constructive use of time, builds discipline and team spirit, makes friends and good for tourism,” Alupo noted.

The awarding ceremony was attended by Iteso Paramount Chief, Emorimor Paul Sande Emolot, who commended Alupo for fostering unity through the football tournament.

Usuk, the overall winners in the tournament received sh2m, a trophy, and medals, Katakwi Town Council 2nd team got shs1.5m plus medals while the Magoro Town Council Team and Toroma Sub County Team tied up and received sh1m each.

Kapujan Sub County team got shs800,000, Usuk SC team sh500,000, Akoboi S/C team sh350,000 and Okore SC shs50,000.

The LC.5 chairperson of Katakwi Geoffrey Omolo, Hellen Grace Asamo, the State Minister for Disability, and Rose Lily Akello, the State Minister for Integrity attended.
