KAMPALA - The first-ever Kampala Defense and Security Expo is to be held in Kampala next month as one of the activities to honour the former Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) Gen. Aronda Nyakairima.
Dabbed as "The Hon Gen Aronda Nyakairima Memorial Events" the occasion is slated to take place on September 10th-12th, 2024 at Commonwealth Resort Munyonyo on Lake Victoria shores in Kampala, a release from UPDF has revealed.
On Wednesday, August 28 Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba, the Chief of Defence Forces (CDF), chaired an implementation Committee meeting to prepare for the events.
Organised by the Ministry of Defence and Veterans' Affairs, the schedule for the day includes thanksgiving prayers and a Memorial Lecture where the President of the Republic of Uganda Gen. Yoweri Museveni will be a keynote speaker.
Gen. Nyakairima served as the CDF from 2003 to 2013.
The Wednesday meeting at the SFC headquarters in Entebbe attended by senior military officials and top Ministry of Defence officials follows other similar engagements since the initial steering committee meeting held in July this year.
The implementation committee is headed by the Ministry of Defence undersecretary of Finance and Administration Mrs Edith Buturo.
Among those who attended the meeting included the SFC Commander Maj Gen BD Mugisha, Defence Intelligence and Security Chief Maj Gen James Birungi, the Chief of Joint Staff Maj Gen Jack Bakasumba, Brig Gen (Rtd) Innocent Oula the Deputy MD NEC among other senior UPDF officers.
Gen. Nyakairima served as the CDF from 2003 to 2013. He died in September 2013 while serving as the Minister of Internal Affairs.
Gen. Aronda had travelled to South Korea on official duty as Minister for Internal Affairs together with four other officials; Prof. Peter Kasenene, then Chairman of the National Identification Registration Authority (NIRA), Judy Gama Obitre, a Director of NIRA, Cletus Turiho, Director of Technology NIRA and Arthur Musinguzi, an aide de camp to Aronda.
However, on return, General Aronda died aboard a flight from South Korea.
