UPDF launches investigations into Lake Edward shooting

Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) investigators have launched a probe to establish the identity and intentions of the attackers at Lake Edward's Rwenshama landing site, which left one dead.

Preliminary reports indicate that on October 1st, the UPDF response team deployed to the Rwenshama landing site in Rukungiri district to probe attacks on fishermen.

Upon approaching the scene, the team came under heavy fire from unknown gunmen.

"Tragically, Staff Sergeant Muhindo Johnson, commander of the response team, died from injuries sustained during the attack," Maj. Kiconco Tabaro, the UPDF 2 Infantry Division Public Information Officer, revealed in a statement on Thursday.

In the statement, Maj. Tabaro noted that the overall security situation remains stable, and tourism activities, including those in Queen Elizabeth National Park, continue without disruption.

Following the incident, stakeholders, including Congolese officials, are scheduled to meet soon to discuss the matter and strengthen coordination along the shared border.

The UPDF urged the residents of Rwenshama landing site and the surrounding communities to remain calm and cooperate with security agencies.
