Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) serving under the African Union Support Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM) have killed a senior Al-Shabaab commander in the Lower Shabelle region.
The militant leader, Osman Hussein Bune Amiir, who was widely regarded as the general commander of Al-Shabaab fighters in Lower Shabelle, was killed in an ambush by UPDF troops near Buulomareer on Sunday, September 14th, the UPDF Directorate of Communications has revealed.
Sector One Commander, Brig Gen Joseph Musoke Ssemwanga, in a brief, reported that the operation also resulted in the recovery of a pistol with three loaded magazines, a porch, binoculars, and two mobile phones, among other items.
Interacting with the troops, he hailed the Buulo Mareer Forward Operating Base (FOB) troops for dealing “a decisive blow against Al-Shabaab.”
A release from UPDF states that Brig. Ssemwanga reassured the soldiers that AUSSOM, UPDF leadership, and international partners remain committed to dismantling the terrorist group’s networks and restoring stability in Somalia.
During his field visit, Brig Gen Ssemwanga also inspected FOBs in Quoryoley and Goloweyn to assess operational readiness and troop welfare.
He was accompanied by Lt Col Justus Magyembe, Contingent Logistics and Engineering Commander, along with commanders responsible for Explosive Ordnance Disposal and Women’s Affairs.
Relatedly, Maj David Ogweng, commander of Buulo Mareer FOB, expressed gratitude to Brig Gen Ssemwanga for his continuous support and guidance, which he said enabled the troops to accomplish their mission. He stressed the determination of his forces to carry out their duties and ensure peace, security, and stability in Somalia.
This is another big loss to the terrorist group following another blow in August.
Last month, Ugandan troops under the African Union Support and Stabilisation Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM), in coordination with the Somali National Armed Forces (SNAF), killed over 50 Al-Shabaab militants, including several senior commanders, during a major military operation in Bariire, Lower Shabelle region.
The offensive, which began on Friday, August 1, 2025, targeted Bariire — a strategic town located approximately 50 kilometres southwest of Mogadishu. Several other fighters were seriously injured.
Al-Shabaab has increasingly relied on VBIEDs, roadside IEDs (RSIEDs), and landmines to destabilise liberated areas, target civilians, and hinder joint operations.
However, UPDF and SNAF forces have maintained momentum, steadily reclaiming territory and degrading the group’s operational capacity.
