UPDF donates scholastic materials to schools in Kigezi sub-region

The gesture is in support of the 1997 presidential initiative of making sure every Ugandan school-going child attends school with proper support materials.

The Uganda Peoples' Defence Forces (UPDF) has donated scholastic materials worth sh75m to a total of 93 schools in the Kigezi sub-region as part of the 45th Tarehe Sita 2026 celebrations.

Beneficiaries include: selected schools in Kabale, Kisoro, Rubanda, Rukiga, Rukungiri and Kanungu districts.

On Friday, Maj. Josephat Tumukunde, Head of Education under UPDF Joint Staff, Formal Education, Sports and Culture, led the team that delivered scholastic materials to Kayungwe Primary School in Kanungu district.

The gesture, he said, is in support of the 1997 presidential initiative of making sure every Ugandan school-going child is attending school with proper support materials," he said.

Support to the schools was unveiled with the first package delivered to Kayungwe Primary School.

Maj. Tumukunde said the package included textbooks, pencils, pens, and exercise books.

At the events, he thanked all stakeholders who have supported the 2026 Tarehe Sita activities in Kigezi Sub-region, such as the New Vision Printing and Publishing Corporation Ltd, which donated textbooks to support schools in need. 

The donation is part of the UPDF's partnership to support education in the country and promote the values of patriotism and national unity.

About Tarehe Sita:

The 45th Tarehe Sita anniversary celebrations kicked off in Kigezi sub-region, honouring the area’s historical support for the liberation struggle, particularly the Front for National Salvation (FRONASA) activities.

The Kigezi sub-region, comprising six districts (Rukiga, Rubanda, Rukungiri, Kanungu, Kabale and Kisoro), played a pivotal role in Uganda’s liberation struggle.

Tarehe Sita is marked every February 6 to commemorate the beginning of the National Resistance Army and the armed struggle.
