The Uganda Peoples Defence Forces (UPDF) soldiers on February 18, 2025, entered the eastern DR Congo's Ituri Province capital Bunia, the capital of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
Uganda army spokesperson acting Maj. Gen Felix Kulayigye confirmed to New Vision Online via telephone that the deployment follows a meeting between the UPDF and the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (FARDC).
“We deployed to avert a potential genocide. A militia group was busy killing one particular ethnic group, so our commanders met with their counterparts in DRC and we agreed to deploy into the town. We have fully deployed into the town,” Kulayigye told New Vision Online.
