Uganda signs electricity sharing agreement with South Sudan

Uganda has signed a power-sharing agreement with Sudan, that will see power generated in Uganda sold to South Sudan. 

The signing ceremony was held at State House, Juba, South Sudan on Tuesday, June 27, 2023.

The minister of energy and mineral development Ruth Nankabirwa represented Uganda while her counterpart Peter Marcello Jelenge represented South Sudan.  

Other signatories to the agreement included the permanent secretary at the ministry of energy and mineral development Eng. Irene Batebe who signed on behalf Uganda Electricity Transmission Company Ltd while Beck Awan Deng the general manager of South Sudan Electricity Cooperation (SSEC) signed for the company. 

Nankabirwa noted that Uganda and South Sudan have kicked off vigorous power trade cooperation. "We would like to see projects coming out that benefits both the people of South Sudan and Uganda. Today's signatures mark the beginning of serious cooperation in power trade.”

“We are going to pull power from small towns in Uganda like Elegu and Oraba and the people at the border of Nimule and Kaya are going to be supplied with power from Uganda," she explained.  

The minister noted that the technical commissioning of the deal was done and what was remaining was how the sales agreement is going to be done. She underlined that that everything had been agreed upon and the signatures have been appended. 

President Yoweri Museveni directed Nankabirwa to meet South Kiir over the power sharing business.
