Uganda continued to prove that they are a team to reckon with when it comes to Scrabble after they scooped bronze at the East, Central, and Southern Africa Scrabble Championship in Botswana over the Easter weekend.
Uganda recently emerged top with gold at the Africa Games last month where Richard Geria also won an individual silver as the sport debuted at the games.
This has now been followed by the bronze managed by another team of four players that included Davis Apuuli, Godwin Murungi, Kenneth Kaheru, and Karen Nambogga at the event held at the Ave Maria Pastoral Center Gaborone.
Apuuli was pivotal for the self-sponsored team in winning the bronze, having finished ninth out of 42 players and picking a cash prize of $160 (sh680,000), in the event which was won by Kenyan Patrick Gitonga Nderitu. Uganda also pocketed sh2.1m for the bronze with the winners taking home sh4.6m while Zambia which finished second overall took home sh2.8m
Nderitu picked 1975 points to win the individual top honours and led his compatriots; Allan Oyende (1271pts) and David Kimani (967pts) to a 1-2-3 finish in the event that attracted five countries.
“The tournament was good and we should have won it if we had more players like the rest of the other participating teams,” Apuuli who finished ninth overall said.
Murungi finished 16th, Kaheru was 22nd while Nambogga was 27th out of 42 players.
Despite finishing 9th Apuuli was able to beat the overall winner including other opponents from South Africa and others from the other participating countries.
