Ugandan authorities have received 24 herds of cattle recovered from Teretenya in South Sudan, months after armed raids on homesteads in Lamwaka B Village, Aringa Parish, Potika Sub-county in Lamwo District.
The recovered animals were stolen between January and March 2026.
Security officials and local leaders from both countries witnessed the handover exercise earlier this week. Timon Loboi, the Commissioner of Ikotos County, led the South Sudanese team.
The 5th Division Deputy Commander, Colonel Gai Mpadwa, said that the recovery and handover reflected growing trust, cooperation, and commitment to peace and security along the Uganda-South Sudan border.
A release from the Ministry of Defence and Veterans Affairs (MoDVA) states that William Komakech, the Resident District Commissioner of Lamwo District, who formally received the animals, welcomed the recovery and called for the immediate return of the remaining animals.
“This recovery gives hope to the affected families, because cattle are not only a source of wealth, but also part of the Acholi cultural heritage,” Komakech said.
Commissioner Loboi called for peaceful coexistence and stronger cross-border relations between communities in Uganda and South Sudan.
He said the South Sudan authorities were committed to ensuring that all the missing animals are returned and that compensation would be considered for any that may have died or been lost.
