After qualifying for the Africa Cup of Nations in November, the senior women's handball team is eyeing the 2025 World Cup.

The team last competed in the Africa Cup of Nations in 1975. However, it qualified for the 26th continental championship during the 13th edition of the Africa Games in March after finishing fifth overall.

The tournament will be in Kinshasa Democratic Republic of Congo later this year from November 25 to December 8 and the winner will qualify for the 2025 World Cup.

Uganda Handball Federation (UHF) Shiela Agonzibwa told Vision Sport that they are grateful to qualify for the continental event and the focus is now on assembling a strong team that will leave an impact at that stage.

“We are excited about qualifying for the Africa Cup of Nations after 45 years and we are going to prepare a strong side for the competitions in November,” Agonzibwa said.

“If we managed to finish fifth in the Africa games on our maiden appearance after 45 years, then we can put up a good performance in Kinshasa.”

However, this will come at a cost and UHF will have to look for sh471m to be able to participate in the event.

According to Agonzibwe, they need sh21m to confirm the participation of the team before May 31 and then look for sh450m for preparation of the team including international friendly games, Upkeep of players and coaching staff, accommodation, and air tickets for the 27-team contingent.

In the World Cup qualifiers, Uganda will face tough opposition from other 15 teams including Tunisia, Egypt, Angola, Cameroon, and Algeria, and hosts the Democratic Republic of Congo of which the winner will qualify for the handball world Cup next year.
