NEW YORK - Foreign affairs minister Jeje Odongo says in Uganda’s pursuit of independent development, China has provided invaluable support.
Odongo remarked on February 18, 2025, while meeting Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi at the United Nations headquarters in New York.
He said Uganda regards China as a trustworthy and reliable partner and admires the achievements of the Communist Party of China in state governance and hopes to learn from China's modernization development path, according to a press release by China's foreign affairs ministry released on February 19.
Odongo endorsed the principles of mutual respect, sovereignty, equality, fairness and justice upheld by China and the BRICS countries. Adding Uganda is willing to work with the BRICS countries to stand on the right side of history.
Uganda's active role lauded
Wang Yi said on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the founding of the United Nations, China proposed to host this Security Council high-level meeting to launch a series of important commemorative events, which has received active support from countries worldwide, including those in Africa.
He appreciated Uganda’s active role as the rotating chair of the Non-Aligned Movement, congratulated Uganda on becoming a BRICS partner country, and standing ready to work together to promote solidarity and cooperation in the Global South and safeguard international fairness and justice.
Wang Yi, who is also a member of the politburo of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, said China and Uganda always respect, trust and support each other.
During the Beijing Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Co-operation, the two countries agreed to elevate China-Uganda relations to a comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership.
Wang Yi said China will always be a sincere friend and a reliable partner of Uganda on its path toward development and revitalisation.
He further said that China is ready to work with Uganda to follow through on the important common understandings reached between their two heads of state and the outcomes of the Beijing Summit and continuously enrich the comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership between China and Uganda.
Africa key to improved global governance
Wang Yi said: "To promote multilateralism, the voice of Africa should not be absent; to improve global governance, the participation of Africa should not be overlooked".
According to him, China is ready to work with African partners to build a just and equitable global governance system and make joint efforts for world peace, stability, development and prosperity.
"The two sides also had an exchange of views on the situation in the Democratic Republic of the Congo," the statement reads.
