Uganda evacuates 42 students from Iran

The government on Friday (June) reported that through guidance from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs official in Kampala, a large number of Ugandans in Iran were registered for evacuation.

The Ugandan government has successfully coordinated the evacuation of 42 Ugandan students and two diplomatic staff from Tehran to Turkey following the outbreak of conflict between the Islamic Republic of Iran and the State of Israel that broke out on June 13, 2025.

The evacuations were managed by Uganda's Embassy team in Tehran, who recently set up an emergency evacuation coordination centre in neighbouring Turkey in cooperation with the Embassy in Ankara.

A press release from the Ministry states that after neighbouring Turkey agreed to issue visas on arrival, a number of coaches (buses) were secured to enable emergency evacuation of the affected Ugandans back home through Turkey.

The Emergency Evacuation Coordination Centre is being overseen by Ambassador Matata Twaha, Charge d’Affaires, assisted by Mr Oscar J. Edule, Minister Counsellor and Mr Agaba Mark, Financial Attaché, Uganda Embassy Tehran.

According to MoFA, the centre will continue operating until all Ugandans in the Islamic Republic of Iran are repatriated home.

On Wednesday, June 18, the first batch to be evacuated was received at the Bargarzan border by Mr Julius Malinga, Second Secretary, Ms Zainah Nabirye, Uganda Embassy in Tehran and Mr Mubarak Daka from the Uganda Embassy in Ankara.

The evacuees were later moved closer to Istanbul Airport.

The ministry has revealed that the group are expected to fly back home aboard commercial chartered aircraft.

Registration and coordination efforts continue to be undertaken for other Ugandan nationals still inside Iran, with the aim of safely guiding, supporting, and ensuring their safe exit and return to Uganda.
