Consul General of Uganda in the Midlands, United Kingdom, Jaffer Kapasi OBE, has congratulated President Yoweri Museveni on his re-election for the seventh term of office.

Kapasi has described the outcome of the 2026 General Election as a strong vote of confidence in the President’s leadership and a reaffirmation of Uganda’s national ethos of stability and progress.

In a congratulatory message posted on social media on January 21, 2026, Kapasi extends heartfelt congratulations to President Museveni and Ugandans, noting that the President’s victory by a large majority reflects the trust Ugandans continue to place in his steady leadership and long-standing commitment to safeguarding the country’s peace, unity and development.

“The election victory with a huge majority reflects the confidence placed in His Excellency’s leadership and his steadfast commitment to protect Uganda’s stability and guide the country on a path of sustained progress,” Kapasi said. “It is also a reminder of our shared national ethos of protecting the gains we have made over the years.”

Drawing on Uganda’s historical experience, Kapasi reflected on the country’s dramatic economic turnaround since the difficult years following the 1972 expulsion of Asians under the Idi Amin regime. He recalled that Uganda’s economy was severely weakened in that period, with the country registering negative growth and deep economic decline.

“After we were deported in 1972, and soon afterwards under Idi Amin, Uganda’s economy fell to minus 20% GDP,” Kapasi noted. “Today, we can proudly speak of steady growth of around six per cent, which is a testament to the resilience of the Ugandan people and the leadership that has prioritised stability, recovery and long-term planning.”

Kapasi praised President Museveni’s role in restoring confidence in Uganda both at home and internationally, creating an environment conducive to investment, rebuilding institutions and fostering national reconciliation. He said these foundations have enabled Uganda to pursue economic diversification and resilience in the face of regional and global challenges.

Looking ahead, the Consul General expressed optimism about Uganda’s future economic prospects, particularly in key growth sectors. He offered prayers for continued advancement in oil and gas development, gold mining and agriculture, with a strong emphasis on value addition to create jobs and boost exports.

“These sectors hold great promise for transforming livelihoods and ensuring inclusive growth for all Ugandans.”

He reaffirmed the commitment of the Ugandan diaspora to support national development efforts and work with government to promote Uganda’s image and interests abroad.

President Museveni won the January 15 elections with 7,946,772 votes constituting 71.65% of the total votes cast, according to the official results released by the Electoral Commission. Robert Kyagulanyi of the National Unity Platform (NUP) party came second, garnering 2,741,238 (24.72%) in the eight-man race.
