Cabinet has approved the National Migration Policy, a significant development towards comprehensive migration management.
Spearheaded by the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the policy endorsed on August 4, aims to unite various government agencies to enhance how migration is managed in the country.
"This pioneering, multi-sectoral policy unites relevant government Ministries, Departments, and Agencies. (MDAs) to enhance migration management comprehensively.
The ministry will now focus on officially launching the policy and initiating a nationwide dissemination process, engaging Ugandans across all regions and the diaspora to ensure its effective implementation," reads a statement circulated on social media by MoIA.
The policy is expected to guide the country's approach to migration, addressing both internal and international movements of people.
Among key objectives, the policy aligns with the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration (GCM), promoting legal and safe migration options.
Under the objective to strengthen migration governance, the policy aims to improve the coordination and effectiveness of government agencies involved in migration management.
On integration with national development goals, the policy seeks to ensure that migration contributes to Uganda's overall development agenda.
The policy also aims to strengthen Uganda's approach to managing the influx of refugees and asylum seekers.

The National Migration Policy is expected to have a significant impact on various aspects of Ugandan society, including border control, employment, social services, and national security. The Ministry of Internal Affairs is now tasked with implementing the policy and ensuring its effective integration into national development plans and strategies.
