Uganda army joins India 79th Independence Day celebrations in Jinja

The Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) has joined the Indian community in celebrating India’s 79th Independence Day at the National Forensic Science University (NFSU)–Uganda Campus in Jinja city.

Speaking at the event, campus director, Air Commodore Kedar Thaakar, reflected on the longstanding ties between India and Uganda, citing shared colonial history, independence struggles and mutual aspirations for emerging opportunities.

He urged vigilance against modern threats such as terrorism, cyberattacks and radicalisation, noting that the NFSU Uganda campus aims to contribute to strengthening security and capacity not only in Uganda but across Africa.

On behalf of the UPDF, Brig. Gen. Wyclif Keita, the joint staff training and doctrine, reaffirmed Uganda’s commitment to co-operation and friendship with India. He said the NFSU presence in Uganda symbolises the deep bonds between the two countries and promotes academic excellence and professional growth.

He said the establishment of the Jinja campus reflects India’s vision for a safer world.

The celebration was attended by senior military and security officials, including Jinja Cantonment Commander Brig. Gen. Emmanuel Kanyesigye, Chief of Staff, Uganda Rapid Deployment Capability Centre (URDCC), Brig. Gen. Flavia Byekwaso, deputy commandant SCSC Kimaka Brig. Gen. Elvis Byamukama, Brig. Gen. Peter Omola, Jinja Police regional commander Charles Nsaba and Members of the Indian business community.
