Uganda Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba has mourned his Kenyan counterpart, Gen. Francis Ogolla and other Kenyan soldiers who passed away after a helicopter crash.

In a statement issued on Monday, April 21, 2024, Kainerugaba says: “I am saddened to learn of the helicopter crash that claimed the life of my counterpart, General Ogolla, the CDF, KDF and other KDF officers on Thursday”.

“The loss of General Ogolla is an unfortunate one, not just for Kenya but for our entire region. We stand in solidarity with our Kenyan brothers and sisters during this difficult time. On behalf of the UPDF and my behalf, I extend our deepest condolences to His Excellency William Ruto the Commander in Chief, the KDF fraternity and all the people of Kenya and East Africa who mourn this loss. General Ogolla's vast military experience and expertise will indeed be greatly missed,” he writes.

According to him, as the UPDF, 'we recall a particular incident that highlights Gen. Ogolla's commitment to service. During the tragedy of the UPDF helicopters crashing into Mt Kenya in 2012'.

"He was the commander of Nanyuki Air Base and he climbed up the mountain himself to search for survivors. His actions directly contributed to the rescue of two helicopter crews,” Kainerugaba says.

It is because of such largesse of heart that Kainerugaba says UPDF will never forget what he did for 'us and we pray for the swift and complete recovery of the survivors of this terrible accident'.

"I implore comrades of the KDF to honour Ogolla's legacy by continuing to work towards a more secure East Africa and Africa, a vision that I am sure he cherished. Rest in peace, General Ogolla,” Kainerugaba says.

On Sunday, UPDF Air Forces commander Lt. Gen. Charles Okidi represented Kainerugaba during Ogolla's burial in Siaya County.

Following his wishes, Ogolla was buried within 72 hours of his death.
