Kampala Resident City Commissioner (RCC) in charge of Makindye Division Mark Baingana has asked the UBOS to involve LCs chairpersons in the census exercise.

Baingana says the move will ensure smooth operations of the census exercise and collection of accurate results due to kick off in May this year.

“The Government largely relies on the support of LC leaders to have meaningful development of the projects to improve the communities. In census, the LCs are the ones who know the households much better to gather the data needed,” Baingana said.

Baingana made the call during a training organised by the Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS) at the East African Labour College in Namuwongo, Kampala. The exercise was aimed at sensitising leaders in Makindye about the listing and mapping exercise for the census.

According to Baingana, the LCs will play a major role in the census and urged UBOS to work hand in hand with the LC chairpersons. He said he had raised this matter with the UBOS executive director to ensure the chairpersons are budgeted for.

UBOS is the principal data collecting, processing, analysing and disseminating agency responsible for co-ordinating and supervising the national statistical government.

UBOS publicity and advocacy advisor Alfred Musamali informed the Leaders that this census is different because it requires proper mapping so that all the people are counted.

“The 2024 census is highly digitised (because) we will use GPS (Global Positioning System) in order to mark the exact locations of the people, their residents and close boundaries,” Musamali said.

He added that the census picture will be captured on May 9 and 10.

Mubarak zone LC1 chairperson John Ssebuliba said people in their communities are well informed of the upcoming census.

“The census exercise is good because it will help the Government to increase on the services they deliver to the communities. Without census, they will not be able to plan for us well for the services we need,” Ssebuliba said.
