Two road crashes in Banda within 24 hours left one person dead and several others injured.
The first incident occurred on March 15, 2025, at around 3:30 am on Jinja Road, prompting a response from Police under the command of Cpl. Ibrahim Sande. The victims were rushed to Mulago Hospital for emergency treatment.
The second, a fatal incident near Luqman Petrol Station, took place on March 16, 2025, at 5:30 am. A police patrol car, registration number UP 00027, led by Sgt. Obura, transported the victim to Mulago Hospital, but the individual was pronounced dead on arrival.
Authorities are investigating both crashes to establish their causes. Motorists were urged to drive cautiously, particularly in the early morning hours when visibility and road conditions can be hazardous.
Police crackdown
As part of ongoing efforts to curb road accidents, the Traffic Police have intensified a nationwide crackdown on reckless driving. Last week, 467 drivers were arrested for various offences, including driving without valid licences, careless driving, speeding, and dangerous loading.
Additionally, 903 motorcycles were impounded for violating traffic regulations, such as failing to wear helmets, riding without a valid license, and operating without insurance policies.
Traffic Police spokesperson Michael Kananura reiterated the need to follow traffic rules, especially for motorcyclists, who remain among the most vulnerable road users. He urged motorists to maintain their vehicles, practice defensive driving, and adhere to speed limits to reduce road fatalities.
In line with road safety efforts, the Traffic Police recently conducted a sensitisation campaign in Wamala Region, reaching 5,524 students and staff in eight schools. The campaign aimed to raise awareness about road safety, particularly for pedestrians and children, who remain at high risk.
According to recent statistics, 1,666 pedestrians lost their lives in road crashes in 2024, including 702 children under the age of 18.
Kananura called on motorists to slow down near schools and residential areas, stay vigilant for pedestrians, and use child restraints in vehicles. He also encouraged parents and teachers to educate children on essential road safety practices.
“We all have a responsibility to keep our children safe. Together, we can reduce the number of fatalities and create a safer future for Uganda’s young people,” Kananura said.
The police continue to urge the public to report traffic violations via the toll-free number 080199099 or WhatsApp 0779 999 999.
