Police in Kisoro on Sunday (May 3) confirmed two children were killed and two others injured following a landslide that occurred at around 05:00 am hours at Nyabiyonga village, Kibumba parish, Murora subcounty, Kisoro district.

Elly Maate, the Kigezi region police spokesperson, identified the deceased as: Brenda Musoni, a female juvenile aged 14 years, a pupil, and Eseri Mujawimana, a female juvenile aged 12 years, both residents of Bukerahe village, Chibumba parish, Murora subcounty, Kisoro district.

"The survivors are; Benon Mulema, aged 70 years old, and Avelina Mbaboneye,  aged 60 years old, both residents of the same village," Maate said.

He explained that the deceased, after breaking off for their first term holidays, were sent by their parents to go and check on their grandparents, where they had been staying until Sunday morning where the house they were sleeping in was half buried by land slides causing their death due to suffocation.

"It had four occupants and the two grandparents managed to survive with minor injuries," he added.

Maate said the scene, which was on a hilly area, was visited and well documented by police, the bodies were retrieved successfully from the soil with the help of the locals, and a postmortem was done.

The survivors, he said, were taken to Chahafi Health Centre for treatment.

Inquiries are at hand.
