Two people, a boda boda rider and a real estate dealer, have been charged with impersonating tax officers.

Fredrick Asiimwe, also known as Fred Agaba, a boda boda rider, and Steve Nuwenyine, a real estate dealer, were on March 18, 2026, charged before Grade One Magistrate Esther Asiimwe with one count of impersonation, contrary to Section 81(6) of the Tax Procedures Code Act.

The prosecution, led by prosecution manager Stuart Aheebwa, alleges that the duo falsely presented themselves as tax officials.

It is further alleged that Asiimwe and Nuwenyine, together with others still at large, on March 11, 2026, in Masaka city, presented themselves as URA tax officers and purported to conduct tax compliance checks.

According to the prosecution, while carrying out the illegal tax compliance exercise, the accused were wearing reflector jackets emblazoned with the URA logo.

A person convicted under Section 81(6) of the Tax Procedures Code Act is liable to up to six years’ imprisonment.

Asiimwe and Nuwenyine appeared in court without legal representation. The court heard that the accused were not ready to apply for bail, prompting the magistrate to remand them until March 30, when they will reappear for bail consideration.

Aheebwa informed the court that further investigations into the matter are still ongoing and asked for more time to enable the prosecution to update it on the status of the investigations.
