TORORO - Hundreds of faithful gathered at Uganda Martyrs Cathedral Nyangole in Tororo Archdiocese on Tuesday (March 31) for the solemn Chrism Mass, also known as the Feast of Priesthood, a liturgical celebration animated by St Kizito Catholic Parish, Paya this time round.

The event saw priests of the archdiocese renewing their vows and reaffirming their commitment to their calling.

Most Rev. Dr Emmanuel Obbo A.J., the chief shepherd of Tororo Archdiocese, presided over the Mass, urging his fellow shepherds to stand in solidarity with God’s people.

"We are one, and we should always walk together in Christ, the priests, the religious, and everyone," Archbishop Obbo emphasised.

Reflecting on global conflicts, Archbishop Obbo called upon the faithful to cultivate compassion for others, underscoring the need for empathy and understanding.

"Use the Holy Week to clean our lives, not only the cloth, but look into where you have offended God," he stated.

Archbishop Obbo stressed the importance of emulating Jesus’ example of unwavering prayer and forgiveness.

"We should be like Jesus, who goes to pray until, when he was on the cross, he still prayed for us, saying, ‘Father, forgive them because they do not know what they're doing."

Addressing the role of priests, Archbishop Obbo emphasised their mission of hope and healing. "As priests, we get ordained after many years of training to give hope to others. It is our work as priests to heal the broken-hearted in our homes, villages, and communities, bringing honour to the dishonoured."

The Chrism Mass, a cornerstone of the Catholic Church’s liturgical calendar, celebrates the priesthood and sacraments. Three holy oils were blessed for use throughout the year: the Oil of the Catechumens, the Oil of the Sick, and the Sacred Chrism.

The event prepared the faithful for the Triduum, commemorating Christ's passion, death, and resurrection, and emphasised the significance of Christ's sacrifice, the role of sacraments, and the priesthood.
