Police clashed with Kayunga youth who defied a directive against erecting arches in the town ahead of the Kabaka’s visit. The Kabaka had been scheduled to officiate Youth Day celebrations in Kayunga but the Banyala, a minority group who inhabit the area were opposed to the visit, requiring the Kabaka to get permission from Ssabanyala, the cultural leader. The Kabaka’s visit was consequently cancelled as numerous riots and protests broke out in different parts of Buganda in what has come to be called the 2009 Buganda riots.
