KABALE - The Police in Kabale district have mounted a hunt for thieves who stole a motorcycle from a crash scene after the rider was killed by a speeding car.
The crash on May 18, 2025, at about 5:00am was at Mwanjari village on the Kabale-Katuna highway leading to the Uganda-Rwanda border point at Katuna.
The Police identified the deceased as Naboth Owomugabe, 20, a boda boda rider and a resident of Nyakayenje village in Bubare sub-county.
It is alleged that the yet to be identified driver of a motor vehicle, UA 325AL Toyota Premio, who was moving from Kabale town towards the border post at high speed, was trying to overtake another vehicle in a sharp corner when he knocked an oncoming motorcycle, killing the rider on the spot.
According to a statement released by Kigezi region Police spokesperson Elly Maate, the incident was registered as a hit-and-run fatal road accident that claimed the life of one person.
He said the passenger on the motorcycle, identified as Henry Byamukama was seriously injured and was later rushed to Kabale Hospital where he was still receiving treatment.
Maate, however, said that by the time the police arrived at the scene, the driver of the motor vehicle had vanished, and efforts were still being made to apprehend him.
He said, however, that traffic officers were shocked that even the motorcycle had been stolen from the scene, leaving the dead body behind.
He said a hunt for those who stole the motorcycle had started.
“We are concerned that the motorcycle was smuggled from the scene of the accident by unknown people and has not yet been recovered,” Maate said.
The Police took the dead body to Kabale Hospital for a post-mortem and later handed it over to relatives for burial.
