ADJUMANI - Police in north-western Uganda are investigating a deadly attack in Adjumani district that left three people dead and two others injured amid rising tensions between rival communities.

Speaking at a press briefing in Naguru on Monday (April 13), police spokesperson Rusoke Kituuma said the attack occurred in the early hours of April 9, 2026, when a group of assailants armed with bows, arrows, and pangas attacked members of the Madi community.

The deceased were identified as Susan Wonzia, Ann Anna Abiria, and Caroline Mamawi.

“At around 2:30 am, attackers believed to be from a neighbouring community launched a coordinated assault, resulting in the death of three individuals and injuries to two others,” Kituuma said.

Security teams comprising the Police and the UPDF responded swiftly to the scene and arrested five suspects, who were found in possession of bows and arrows.

The bodies of the deceased were transferred to Adjumani General Hospital for postmortem examinations.

Kituuma said security forces have since been deployed in the area to prevent retaliatory violence and restore calm.

He urged residents, particularly communities with a history of tensions such as the Madi and Acholi, to exercise restraint.

“We are appealing to all community members and leaders to remain calm, avoid acts of revenge, and cooperate with ongoing investigations,” he said.

Police are also working with local leaders and peace committees to de-escalate tensions.

“We want to assure the public that investigations are ongoing, and all those found culpable will be held accountable,” Kituuma added.
