KAMPALA - Three Police officers from Busia district Central Police Station who allegedly helped a gold scam suspect to escape from lawful custody were on Tuesday (January 6) arraigned before the Anti-Corruption Court in Kampala.
They face charges of abuse of office, aiding a prisoner to escape and conspiracy to defeat justice.
They were later remanded to prison.
This follows their arrest by the State House Anti-Corruption Unit (SHACU) working together with the Criminal Investigation Directorate (CID) and the Office of the Director Public Prosecutions (ODPP).
In a statement, Police named the suspects as Godfrey Kali, Peter Owiny and Oscar Odul.
Najib Kasule, the suspect who they are alleged to have helped escape, had been intercepted at the Uganda-Kenya border.
This reportedly happened between December 22, 2025 and December 23, 2025.
"The three being employed as Police officers attached to Interpol and terrorism tactical at Busia customs office abused their authority and did an arbitrary act when they aided the escape of Najib Kasule," said SHACU.
Kasule is a key suspect in a gold scam being investigated by SHACU, in which an American national was defrauded of over 840,000 US dollars (3.04 billion Ugandan shillings).
The three suspects were remanded until January 21 when they are expected to next return to court.
