TORORO - A 15-year-old boy, Ochwo Charles, died after a quarry collapsed on him while he was mining murram with friends in Achilet B Zone, Tororo District.

The incident occurred on February 22, 2025, at around 5:00 PM. His friends immediately alerted his father, who, along with other residents, rushed to rescue him, but he was found dead.

“Our preliminary findings show that the site lacked proper safety measures. Investigations are ongoing to determine further details,” said IP Mugwe J. Moses, Ag. PRO Bukedi South Region.

Trapped in collapsed structures, valley dams, pit latrines

In one of the most shocking revelations, 200 newborn babies were rescued from latrines and other pits in 2024.

“Cases of newborns being dumped in latrines remain a serious issue. We continue to rescue these innocent babies, but prevention must start with communities,” Tanui stated.

Stephen Tanui, Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIGP) and Director of Fire and Rescue Services, confirmed that these cases were part of a 300-person rescue effort, which also involved people trapped in collapsed structures, valley dams, and home accidents.

“We continue to rescue these innocent babies, but prevention must start at the community level,” Tanui emphasized.

Other emergencies included home safety traps and collapsed structures, with a total of 300 people rescued throughout the year.
