Uganda Manufacturer's Association (UMA) grounds in Kampala are today, February 1, 2024, a hive of activity as teachers make selections for students to join Senior One at a secondary school.

With a crowded entrance to the main hall, it is methodical as teachers line up for registration before accessing the hall.

After accessing the hall, teachers are given lists containing the names of students on which they base the number of students admitted to their schools and the numbers that should be distributed to other schools based on the cut-off points.

Uganda Muslim Teachers Association member Mahmood Kintu said the essence of the exercise is for placement of Primary seven leavers to senior one.

He revealed that at the venue, they have teachers from schools that were registered by the education ministry for selection schools that are purely under Universal Secondary Education (USE) and government-aided schools that do not have USE.

"In primary seven, children make choices on which school they want to join at secondary level. This is the time they should know the school they have been admitted to," he said.

A total of 648,662 pupils who qualified to join Senior One will know their fate after the national selection and placement exercise has concluded today, February 1, 2024.

Pupils will be placed in over 2,000 government-aided and private schools which are participating in the national exercise.

Last year, most of the top schools like Gayaza High, King's College Buddo, Uganda Martyrs Namugongo, and St. Mary's Kitende stopped at aggregate 5.

According to data from the Uganda National Examinations Board (UNEB), 88% of the 736,931 candidates passed last year's PLE and are fit to join S1. This was the same pass rate for the 2022 cohort.

However, last year, there was a 10% (83,400) decrease in candidature compared to the 2022 PLE sitting.
