Fred Ssekabila, 45, a bodaboda rider, his wife and four children died in a fire that broke out in the early hours of May 29, 2025, in Bweyogerere, Wakiso district.
Kampala Metropolitan Police deputy spokesperson Luke Owoyesigyire says at about 3:00am, a loud blast was heard from Ssekabila's residence.
In a statement, Owoyesigyire says efforts to rescue the family by concerned neighbours were futile, considering that the whole house had already been engulfed by the fire, making rescue efforts extremely difficult.
Police were alerted, and the Fire Prevention and Rescue Services team responded swiftly, successfully containing the fire and preventing it from spreading to adjacent properties.
The deceased have been identified as:
Eng. Ibrahim Atim, one of the neighbours, said Ssekabila and his wife had been embroiled in a bitter dispute for months, fuelled by his desire to sell their plot of land.
Forensic police carry one of the six bodies to police van from the scene of crime in Bukasa on May 19, in Bukasa Bweyogere division.
Ssekabila, a bodaboda rider, had been struggling with his family for some time. The tension between him and his wife had been building up, and their arguments had become more frequent. The final straw came when Fred decided to sell their plot of land in Bukasa, Kizungu zone, and his wife refused to give her consent.
The disagreement escalated into a violent confrontation, and Ssekabila's neighbours would later report that they had heard loud arguments and even seen Ssekabila brandishing a panga in an attempt to harm his family.
“I had even intervened in a previous altercation, begging Ssekabila to spare his family,” Atim said.
But on the fateful Thursday morning, Ssekabila's anger boiled over into a horrific act of violence.
He allegedly set fire to their house, trapping his wife and four children inside.
