A suspect arrested during an intelligence-led operation in Bugweri district shocked police after biting off part of a police officer’s ear while resisting arrest.
The incident occurred during an overnight operation conducted between midnight and 5:30 am on April 5, 2026, targeting criminal gangs linked to a surge in robberies and phone snatching in Idudi A, B and C villages.
According to Michael Kasadha, the Busoga East regional police spokesperson, the operation was aimed at dismantling groups locally known as “Fangone Forest” and “Gaza”.
“The operation was intelligence-led and aimed at cracking down on notorious gangs behind robberies and phone snatching in Bugweri. A total of 18 suspects were arrested,” Kasadha said.
The suspects were identified as Aziz Magumba (21), Hamidu Kisambira (18), Arony Kasadha (20), Jackson Sajabi (20), Salim Kaziba (20), Abasi Kisambira (20), Kuzaifa Mudasi (29), Binasali Mudasi (18), Rahim Temywa (22), Twayiri Muwaya (20), Sudaisi Kisambira (20), Grace Mulongo (25), Amsi Walyaka (21), Rahim Matende (21), Aramanzan Musobya (17), Jamada Mulondo (19), Tarvin Kirunda (17) and Keneth Lwayi (17).
Kasadha said the suspect, Jamada Mulondo, turned violent during the arrest.
“He grabbed a panga and attempted to attack the Officer in Charge of Bugweri Police Station, Robert Nagolo. Although he was subdued, he bit off part of the OC’s left ear during the scuffle and has since been charged with attempted murder,” he said.
In a related development, two suspects, Salim Kaziba and Twayiri Muwaya, were found in the company of female juveniles aged 17 and 13.
“They have been charged with defilement, and the victims were rescued and taken for medical examination,” Kasadha added.
Police recovered several exhibits during the operation, including flags associated with the gangs, seven suspected stolen smartphones, a 32-inch television set, and other items believed to be linked to criminal activity.
Kasadha said investigations are ongoing, with more arrests expected as security agencies intensify efforts to dismantle the criminal networks.
