Three suspects have been fined sh3,908,000 for alleged burglary and theft of four Spark 40 smartphones, seven feature phones and cash.
The suspects are Edmond Wokorach, also known as Eddy, 19, a Senior Six student of Gulu Senior Secondary School, Alfonse Okello, 24, a second-year student of Gulu University, and Simon Ojok, 36, a mason, all residents of Unyama A Cell in Laroo -Pece Division, Gulu City.
The complainant, Dickens Ojok, owner of an electronics shop in Omoro town council, Omoro District, reported that the suspects broke into his shop two weeks ago and stole four Spark 40 smartphones, seven feature phones and shillings 720,000.
Ojok explained that he hired a phone tracker who helped trace one of the stolen items Spark 40 smartphones and found one in possession of Ojok, who claimed to have bought it for shillings 230,000 from Okello and Wokorach at Unyama trading centre.
Ojok’s arrest led to the subsequent apprehension of Wokorach and Okello.
Upon arrest, the suspects were presented before local leaders and the Office of the Deputy Resident City Commissioner for Laroo-Pece Division where they pleaded with the complainant not to hand them over to the Police but instead be made to compensate him with shillings 3,908,000 within two weeks, a period ending on October 31, 2025.
According to Lajec Atto, the Chairperson of Unyama A Cell, Wokorach identified as the lead suspect will pay sh2,000,000, Okello who connected the buyer, will pay sh1,000,000 and Ojok, who bought the phone without requesting a receipt or sale agreement, will pay sh908,000.
