In the wake of a rapidly advancing digital world, Uganda is trapped at a critical juncture where collective action is essential to brave the challenging digital landscape and foster sustainable development.

Governments, agencies, the private sector and stakeholders were tipped about an urgent need for a unified effort to equip Ugandans with the skills, infrastructure, and resources necessary to expand Uganda’s digital economy and create more opportunities for Ugandans.

This call for collective action was voiced at a workshop in Four Points by Sheraton in Kampala, where policymakers, industry leaders, civil society organizations and community representatives convened to discuss strategies for navigating Uganda's digital future.

"Uganda stands at a pivotal moment in its history, where access to digital technologies can catalyze economic growth, social inclusion, and innovation," stated Hatwib Mugasa, the Executive Director of National Information Technology Authority of Uganda (NITA-U). "Realizing these opportunities requires a collective effort from all sectors of society to bridge the gap between those who have access to digital tools and those who do not."

The symposium highlighted several key challenges facing Uganda as it seeks to navigate the digital landscape, including limited internet connectivity in rural areas, a shortage of skilled professionals in the tech industry, and barriers to digital literacy among marginalized communities.

Mugasa said digital connectivity enables smooth operations in business, education, health services and accountability.

This was during a Trusted Data Exchange Workshop under the theme Driving Digital and Socio-Economic Transformation in Uganda. Sponsored by NITA-U and Digital Impact Alliance (DIAL), the two-day workshop attracted participants from Uganda, Kenya, India, Estonia and the Netherlands.

In his keynote address, the Minister of ICT Chris Baryomunsi stressed how the government prioritizes initiatives that provide training and support to ministries and the underserved communities by equipping them with the skills and resources needed to participate in the digital economy.

"As we chart our course towards a digital future, it is important to work together to ensure that no one is left behind," remarked Baryomunsi.

"Through collective action and collaboration, we can overcome the challenges posed by the steep digital landscape and build a brighter, more prosperous future. The government is committed to expanding the internet infrastructure, promoting digital literacy programs, and fostering partnerships with the private sector to drive innovation and investment in the tech industry.”
