Retired Mukono Diocese Bishop the Rt. Rev. James Williams Ssebaggala has been appointed caretaker of Luwero Diocese for eight months.

A letter signed by Church of Uganda Archbishop Dr Stephen Kaziimba says the move comes after a telephone conversation and much prayer.

Kaziimba says due to the nullification of the Rev. Canon Godfrey Kasana as the fourth bishop of Luwero Diocese, the organising committee and the leadership of Luwero are asking for time to organize themselves.

"Because of the need, your service commences immediately on Tuesday the 18th of this month, for a period of eight months until the 18th of March next year and I'm glad you agree for this reason because this work is not easy and for by the grace of God it will come to an end," Kaziimba tells Ssebaggala in a letter dated July 14, 2023.

In the letter, the Archbishop outlined the things Bishop Ssebagala will do, including overseeing and monitoring the diocese on behalf of the Archbishop, preaching the word of God, observing the progress of the diocese, confirmation of children, baptism, ordaining ministers and the ordination as a bishop.

Bishop Ssebagala will also chair all diocesan councils, but will be doing all this from his retired home in Mukono Diocese, as well as transferring ministers, but based on the decision of the Archbishop of the Church of Uganda.

The letter also listed the benefits of the bishop including 75 per cent of the current bishop's salary, he should not be given a house in the diocese, but he should get a 25 per cent accommodation allowance, and he is free to use a car of the bishop and driver, but in official duties and receiving allowances while serving.

Kaziimba urged Bishop Ssebagala and his household to do this work well and to keep the scripture of Ephesians 4:11: Unity for service and growth, as it will guide him during his ministry.
