Soroti Chief Magistrate, Hilda Bakanansa Walaga, on Monday, May 12, 2025, sentenced a 19-year-old student to eight months in prison for defilement.

While delivering the sentence, Magistrate Walaga said the punishment was intended to reform the accused and serve as a lesson to others.

The court heard that in April 2024, at Kadinya Village, Ogwolo Parish in Katine sub-county, Soroti district, the accused, Attorney Okwero, followed a 14-year-old pupil into her grass-thatched house at night and defiled her.

It was also revealed that Okwero had attempted to settle the defilement case with the victim's parents, an act prohibited by law.

State prosecutor Paul Okello told the court that defilement cases are on the rise in the area and urged the court to hand down a deterrent sentence to send a strong warning to potential offenders.

Before sentencing, Okwero pleaded for leniency, expressing remorse and a desire to reform and return to school.
