Christians have been urged to translate their faith into action as Church of Uganda’s Soroti Diocese officially opened its annual diocesan convention, with a strong call for commitment to God, unity and hard work at the start of the New Year.
Opening the week-long gathering on Monday, January 5, 2026, the Bishop of Soroti Diocese, Rt Rev. Kosea Odongo, cautioned believers against complacency and laziness, emphasising that genuine Christianity must be reflected in daily conduct beyond church gatherings.
The convention, which runs from January 4 to 10, 2026, is being held at Soroti Demonstration Primary School under the theme “Christ the King”. It has attracted hundreds of Christians from different parts of Uganda and neighbouring countries.

In his keynote address, Bishop Odongo challenged participants to use the New Year as a turning point for spiritual renewal and responsible living, noting that faith without action does little to transform families, communities and the nation.
He called on Christians to remain united and to uphold values that promote peace and productivity, particularly as the country approaches a sensitive election period.
The bishop also commended families for allowing their members to attend the convention and encouraged participants to remain committed throughout the entire week, saying consistency is key to spiritual growth.
Adding a regional perspective, guest speaker Rt. Rev. Julius Wanyoike from Kenya reminded believers that Christianity transcends national borders. He urged worshippers to focus on shared faith values, stressing that Christians across the region serve one God and are called to live as one body in Christ.
Participants said the convention provides an opportunity for reflection and renewal.
Charles Eceku from Toroma subcounty in Katakwi district said he attended seeking God’s blessings and personal transformation in the New Year.
Rose Jane Aigi from Serere district noted that she was particularly praying for peace and harmony ahead of the forthcoming elections.
Organisers said the convention will continue with prayers, Bible teachings, fellowship sessions and sermons aimed at strengthening Christians spiritually and morally as they embark on 2026.
As the Soroti Diocese convention progresses, church leaders say its message goes beyond spiritual nourishment, calling on believers to play an active role in building peaceful, hardworking and united communities across the country.
