A councillor in Uganda's eastern city of Soroti was charged on Thursday (March 12) with stealing a motorcycle meant for doing government work.
Appearing before the Soroti Magistrate's Court, Samuel Eyangu pleaded not guilty to the charges and went on to apply for bail.
The government motorcycle in question, a Yamaha brand, was donated to the Soroti District Commercial Office to assist in monitoring government programmes, including Parish Development Model (PDM) activities.
Eyangu was arrested last week after the commercial office reported that the motorcycle had gone missing.
During the hearing in court, lead prosecutor Doreen Adero confirmed that investigations into the alleged theft were ongoing.
Magistrate Grade One Kasujja Kibirige Apollo subsequently remanded Eyangu for one week to review his bail application.
Present in court were senior commercial officer Joy Apolot and deputy commercial officer Robert Enou, who attended to observe the proceedings.
As the accused awaits the bail application verdict, the case continues to draw attention due to the councillor’s political position and the government’s push to safeguard public property.
