Somali Military Chiefs brief Muhoozi on security situation in Mogadishu

The Chief of Defence Forces, Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, held talks with Somali military chiefs during an engagement in Nairobi earlier today February 22.

The Mogadishu team were led by the Deputy Chief of Defence of Somali National Armed Forces, Brig. Gen. Madey Nurey Sheikh. 

The Somali and Uganda delegations, the Chiefs of Defence Forces (CDFs) from East African Community (EAC) Member States, are in Kenya meeting to discuss the security situation in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

Without details, a media handout from the UPDF spokesman's office stated that Brig. Gen. Sheikh's team briefed Gen. Kainerugaba on the security situation in Mogadishu. 

They also expressed gratitude for the UPDF's role in maintaining peace and stability in Somalia since their initial deployment in 2007.  

Gen. Kainerugaba thanked the chiefs for their courtesy call and wished them success in their efforts.

Maj. Gen. James Birungi, Chief of Intelligence and Security, attended the meeting. 

UPDF was the first to deploy troops under the African Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) in Somalia in March 2007 to restore peace in the war-torn country. 

In April 2022, the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) was reconfigured as the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS).

Effective January 1, 2025, ATMIS was replaced with the African Union Support and Stabilisation Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM).

The decision followed The UN Security Council Resolution 2767 (2024) endorsed the African Union Peace and Security Council's decision.
