Sheikh Abubakar Umar Obilan, the North Eastern Regional Assistant Mufti, has rallied Ugandans to remain calm and united during the electoral period, as Uganda edges closer to the 2026 general election.

He said this time should be for sober reflection rather than division.

The Muslim cleric said Ugandans now have the perfect opportunity to assess and evaluate candidates at all levels — from the presidency to local leadership — and choose leaders based on their ability to serve the people.

According to him, voters should carefully examine the character, vision, and manifestos of those seeking leadership, instead of being swayed by money or political propaganda.

Obilan also warned the public against spreading misleading information or engaging in inflammatory statements that could fuel tension.

He instead called for the promotion of harmony and understanding throughout the election period.

The North Eastern Regional Assistant Mufti also appealed to community members to show compassion during the festive season by sharing the little they have with the needy as a sign of love and solidarity.

He encouraged families to celebrate responsibly and plan wisely, reminding parents to save money for the upcoming academic year when learners return to school for a new school term.
