Seven family members perish in Masaka-Mbarara crash

LWENGO - Police on Saturday, December 27, 2025, said seven family members, were killed in a fatal crash along the Masaka-Mbarara highway. 

Michael Kananura, the Traffic Police spokesperson, said the accident occurred on Saturday at approximately 4:30 am at Njagalakasayi, Lwengo District, along the Masaka-Mbarara road.

"All seven occupants of the Toyota Fielder died on the spot. The deceased include a man, his wife, their four children, and the man’s brother," Kananura said.

He added, "We urge all motorists to avoid reckless overtaking, especially at night when visibility is poor. Drivers are further advised to limit night travel where possible and to ensure they are well-rested to prevent fatigue-related crashes."

The crash involved a Fuso Fighter truck (registration number UBP 510V) and a Toyota Fielder (registration number UBH 476W). Preliminary investigations indicate that the driver of the Toyota Fielder, who was travelling from the Masaka side, attempted to overtake a queue of vehicles and collided head-on with an oncoming Fuso truck.

He revealed that the Toyota Fielder, travelling from Masaka towards Mbarara, crossed into the opposite lane and collided head-on with the Fuso, which was heading towards Masaka.

"The impact was fatal, killing all seven occupants of the Toyota Fielder on the spot," he added. 

Family and friends identified the deceased as Ivan Burahi and his wife, Brenda Ainembabazi and their four children, and Burahi's brother. 

"It's painful, the entire family has perished," a friend said. 

"The Traffic Police responded to the scene. Both vehicles were towed to the police station pending an inspector of motor vehicles, and bodies were taken to Masaka city mortuary pending a postmortem," Twaha stated. 

He said the possible cause of the accident is reckless, though investigations are still ongoing.
