Amid ongoing challenges in land title acquisition, members of the public are being urged to exercise caution when selecting private surveyors.

During an open day and public dialogue organised by the Ministry of Lands, Housing, and Urban Development at their zonal office, officials warned communities to be vigilant when hiring private surveyors to assist in securing land titles.

Stephen Ochola, the LC5 chairperson for Serere district, highlighted the importance of utilising services provided by the Soroti regional lands office. He advised the Teso community to seek assistance from reputable surveyors to avoid unnecessary delays in the land acquisition process.

Robert Adiama, the resident district commissioner for Serere, echoed Ochola’s sentiments, stressing the need for people to work closely with the regional land office.

He highlighted that land disputes account for nearly 80% of conflicts in Serere and require collaborative efforts to resolve.

Jorem Opian, Chairperson of the Soroti City Land Board, challenged private surveyors to uphold professionalism and integrity in their work to remain relevant to the communities they serve.

Meanwhile, Michael Osele, principal assistant secretary at the Soroti regional lands office, acknowledged that while several factors contribute to delays in land processing, some private surveyors have worsened the situation.
