KAMPALA - A sales and marketing officer at Norbrook Uganda Limited has been charged with embezzling sh229 million from the company.
Michael Nsubuga, a resident of Kireka in Kira Division, was formally charged on July 8, 2024, before the Nakasero-based Anti-Corruption Court presided over by Justice David Makumbi.
Nsubuga faces three charges: embezzlement contrary to Section 18(b)(iii) of the Anti-Corruption Act, Cap 116; theft contrary to Sections 236(1) and 254 of the Penal Code Act, Cap 120; and obtaining money by false pretence contrary to Section 292 of the Penal Code Act.
According to the prosecution, led by Senior State Attorney Gertrude Apio from the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP), Nsubuga allegedly stole veterinary drugs worth Sh229 million between February 2019 and October 2021 while employed at Norbrook Uganda Limited.
It is alleged that the theft occurred at Container Village in Kampala, where he had access to the stock as a sales and marketing officer.
Prosecution further alleges that between November 2021 and June 2022, also at Container Village, Nsubuga stole additional veterinary drugs valued at sh87.5 million.
In a separate incident, it is alleged that in May 2022, Nsubuga fraudulently registered vehicle number UBK 778T in his name at the Uganda Revenue Authority’s Motor Vehicle Registration Unit in Kampala, contrary to provisions of the Traffic and Road Safety Act, 1998.
He was initially charged on February 26, 2025, before Principal Grade One Magistrate Christopher Opit and was later committed to the High Court for trial, where he was formally charged. He denied the charges, and he is out on bail.
Justice David Makumbi directed both the prosecution and the defence to agree on the documents to be used during the trial and to draft a memorandum of understanding.
He further instructed them to update the court on the agreed facts by July 23, 2025.
