Police in Rukungiri have arrested a 19-year-old Rwandan national in connection with the murder of a 40-year-old woman, a resident of Kasikizi cell, Kisiizi parish, Nyarushanje sub-county in Rukungiri District.
 
Elly Maate, the Kigezi Regional Police Spokesperson identified the suspect as Emmanuel Miyonsenga, a herdsman and the victim as Maria Kabondo, who was her employer. 

“It's alleged that on Saturday, January 21, 2023, at about 1:00 am, Apurinari Ndazorobera, who reported the matter was from Kisiizi police post together with two friends after they had taken a suspect accused of stealing matooke. They came across the body of a naked woman near the gate of Makutano hotel. They stopped to see whether they could identify the body,” Maate said. 

He noted that Irene Ntabweza who was with Ndazorobera managed to identify a cape which was next to the deceased. 

“She went ahead and identified the cape that was next to the body as that of the deceased’s former herdsman, one Niyonsenga. After identification of the cape, they moved to Nyabweza's residence where they expected the suspect to be, and they found him hiding in the kitchen without the cape and with some bloodstains on his hands and head,” Maate added. 

He said Niyonsenga was arrested and taken to Kisiizi police post where the case was reported. 

A team from Rukungiri Central Police Station visited the scene, documented it and the body was conveyed to Kisiizi hospital mortuary for postmortem. 

Maate said inquiries were ongoing.
