KAMPALA - Ruling on the confirmation of murder charges against the embattled Makindye West Member of Parliament Allan Ssewanyana and four others has been deferred to September 15, because it is not ready.

On the same date, the court presided over by Justice Alice Komuhangi of the International Division of the High Court will deliver a ruling in an application in which Ssewanyana's co-accused, Jude Muwonge, claims he was tortured.

The duo, who appeared in the court today, August 26, 2025, faces several counts of murder, terrorism, and attempted murder, jointly with four others, emanating from a spate of killings in Masaka.

The others are Bulo Wamala, John Mugerwa, Jackson Kanyike, and Mike Sserwadda.

Magistrate Millicent Kemigisha made the communication on behalf of Justice Komuhangi.

The state is being represented by Chief State Attorney Richard Birivumbuka and senior state attorney Joseph Kyomuhendo, while lawyers Caleb Alaka, Erias Lukwago, and Shamim Malende are defending the suspects.

Background

“Between January and August last year, the accused and others still at large, with intent to intimidate the public for political, religious, or economic purposes, indiscriminately directly involved themselves in the murders and attempted murder of people in Masaka region,” the charge sheet reads.

In November 2023, the MPs, together with the five others, were committed for trial over the murder of Mugerwa Kizza, Sulaiman Kakooza, and the attempted murder of Ronald Sebyoto.

According to the indictment seen by this website, one of the accused (Sserwadda) allegedly confessed to having participated in the murders and revealed that he was working with Wamala, Kanyike, Mugerwa, and the MP to reclaim their presidential ‘victory’.

The meetings, which are said to have been graced by Ssegirinya and Ssewanyana, were allegedly coordinated by Wamala and Diego Bukenya, who is still at large.

The indictment stated that the accused targeted the Masaka region because it attracts a lot of media attention.

The MP allegedly gave his co-accused cash ranging from sh50,000 to sh100,000 to execute the ‘mission’.
