RUBIRIZI - Police in Rubirizi district are investigating the death of 22-year-old Deo Atwijukire, also known as Atari, who was found dead in a banana plantation in Kikumbo parish on August 31, 2025.

Local residents identified the deceased as a known repeat offender who had allegedly just returned from Nyamushekyera Prison. He was said to belong to a group of habitual thieves operating in the area.

Police recovered the body and transported it to Rugazi Health Center IV mortuary for a post-mortem examination. Investigators suspect he was lynched by a rival gang, but the circumstances leading to his death remain unclear.

Apollo Tayebwa, the Greater Bushenyi Regional Police Spokesperson, condemned the killing, warning against rival criminal groups operating in the area.

“Even if someone is suspected of theft, communities must hand them over to authorities. No one has the power to kill or punish outside the law,” he said.

Police are pursuing leads to identify those responsible for the killing while calling on residents to cooperate with investigations.
