River Kagera water finally delivered to Mbarara’s Boma reservoirs

MBARARA - The construction of 65m euros (about sh73, 560,736.48) Kagera water project along River Kagera to address water scarcity in Isingiro district and Mbarara City has been completed, as water finally hits in Boma Reservoirs in Mbarara City.

According to the information posted by Dennis Muramuzi, General manager National Water and Sewerage Corporation, Mbarara area, on the NWSC MBARARA  STAKEHOLDERS' PLATFORM, Tuesday morning, said “Milestone Achievement - Delivery of River Kagera Water to Boma Reservoir.”

Muramuzi states, “I am pleased to inform you of a significant achievement under the Kagera Water Project in the Mbarara area.

As of 9:50am today, the project successfully delivered River Kagera water to the Boma reservoirs, marking the completion of a 60-kilometre transmission stretch from the border with Tanzania.”

He adds, “This milestone represents a major step forward in enhancing the region’s water supply infrastructure and improving access to clean water for the communities of Mbarara and the surrounding areas.

We extend our sincere appreciation to all teams, partners, and stakeholders whose dedication and collaboration have made this accomplishment possible.”

He announced a site visit next Tuesday at Kagera water works and Kabingo booster station.

Several Stakeholders interviewed expressed excitement that the project launched in 2022 has finally come to completion, with Ronald Taremwa, the Mbarara City councillor and a secretary finance, saying, “For I will leave council a happy man, because of seeing the results of the resolution, I spearheaded on Katete impediment that was delaying this noble project.

Government of Uganda secured a 65m euros loan from Agence Française de Development (AFD), a French Development Agency, to construct a water treatment plant along River Kagera in Kikagate to address water challenges in Isingiro district and Mbarara City. 

The project being implemented by the National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC) and the Ministry of Water and Environment was contracted to SOGEA SATOM Uganda in JV with Vinci Construction Grand Projects. 

In 2023, Eng Jackson Nimusiima, the project manager from National Water and Sewerage Corporation for the Kagera water project, explained that the project has two components for drinking water that will produce 30,000 cubic meters per day, while the other water for irrigation project will produce 700,000 cubic meters per day. 

“Isingiro people will benefit from the water project, taking 18,000 cubic meters per day. It is only 12000 cubic meters per day, which is going to Mbarara,” Eng Nimusiima added.
