Bishop Reuben Kisembo of Ruwenzori Anglican Diocese has, like many other influential leaders across Uganda, added his voice to the clarion call for peaceful elections as Ugandans warm up to elect their next set of leaders starting mid-January.
This was in his message during a Christmas Day service at St John's Cathedral in Fort Portal City on Thursday (December 25).
Kisembo said this festive holiday should herald a continuation of peace and tolerance in Uganda's political arena. In the same tone, he condemned brutality against political actors.
"Security agents should stop beating up people," said the bishop, adding that this is a time for Ugandans to show that they have become politically and spiritually mature.
In celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ, he urged Christians to recognise God's Son as a sign of peace. He rallied all Ugandans to be vigilant in maintaining peace, which he said is central to the development of the country.
Richard Rwabuhinga, LC5 chairperson for Kabarole district, commended the bishop for steering the diocese well while at the helm, saying "a lot has been achieved and Christians have remained united".
Irene Linda Mugisa, the Fort Portal City Woman Member of Parliament, paid tribute to the relationship between the diocese and the city's political leadership.
"We appreciate Bishop Kisembo and the entire clergy in the diocese for giving us a platform to perform our duties as elected members of the people. They have also helped us identify some gaps in service delivery, which we are addressing," she said.
