Jan 12, 2024

According to the Uganda Bureau of Statistics, 2021 report, GBV is an everyday threat to Ugandan women and girls.

Arimo argues that if GBV is to be curbed among couples in the Teso region, the women have to tame their appetite for expensive things out of reach of their partners.

The East Kyoga Regional Child and Family Protection Office has warned married women against putting extra demands on their husbands.

According to the office, one of the drivers of gender-based violence (GBV) is unrealistic demands from women.

The in charge of the office, Rose Atim Arimo, says instead, that women should live within their means and those of their partners.

Arimo argues that if GBV is to be curbed among couples in the Teso region, the women have to tame their appetite for expensive things out of reach of their partners.

According to the Uganda Bureau of Statistics, 2021 report, GBV is an everyday threat to Ugandan women and girls. The National demographic data from 2020 also reveal that 56% of married women aged 15-49 reported having suffered physical or sexual violence by a husband.

According to Arimo, the effects of financial abuse are often devastating to victims, especially the men in this case as they often feel inadequate and unsure of themselves to provide for their 'over demanding wives’.

She now urges women to desist from making their partners provide the items they desire under duress.

Atim says duress is the act of using force, false imprisonment, coercion, threats, or psychological pressure to compel someone to act contrary to their interests which is not right for the families.

She, therefore, advises the women to go slow while asking for money from their husbands to sustain peace in their families.

Arimo was speaking to Vision Group's Etop Radio on Tuesday, January 9, 2024.
