The railway level crossing along Mukwano Road in Kampala will remain closed temporarily for the next two weeks to allow for works on that railway section.

The closure started Friday night (December 1) and will last until December 16, according to a notice issued by Uganda Railways Corporation (URC).

A temporary diversion route connecting the Mukwano roundabout to Jinja Road has since been created. It is a single carriage temporary road.

This new route is for only light vehicles, motorcycles and pedestrians.

Warning errant drivers to "stay away", URC also said all heavy trucks are not permitted to access the diversion and has advised the drivers "to use alternative routes".

A number of city roads are being fixed ahead of the 19th Non-Allied Movement (NAM) summit that Uganda will host early next year.

Priority has been given to routes that will facilitate the movement of expected dignitaries between hotels and Speke Resort Munyonyo, the venue.

Uganda will host the NAM conference alongside the G77 Third South Summit from January 15 - 23.

Meanwhile, Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) has also released a notice of the temporary closure of the railway crossing bridge at Nakawa.

"Due to ongoing rehabilitation works on Port Bell Road, the section on the overhead railway crossing bridge — near Makerere Business School (MUBS) — shall be closed," the statement shared on X, formerly Twitter, reads in part.

The closure will take effect on Saturday (December 2) from 10pm to 6am and on Sunday (December 3) from 10pm to 6am.

Motorists and other road users intending to access Nakawa-Mbuya from either side along Port Bell Road have been advised to "consider using alternative routes as per the diversion and guidance signages installed".

A total of 10.01 kilometres of the Port Bell and Spring roads are undergoing reconstruction and dualling.

The works include signalization of five junctions in Nakawa division under Lot 2 of the Kampala City Road Rehabilitation Project.

KCCA has partnered with Zhejiang Communications Construction Group Company Limited (ZCCC) for the works.
