Public speech, debate guide book launched

“We must be at the forefront of advocacy for the rights and privileges of all, especially in Africa. Through debate, we learn tolerance and acceptance in instances where we become tactically challenged because the debate is basically about the argument,” Alupo said.

KAMPALA - A book, which is expected to help shape public speech and debates, especially among the youth has been launched in Kampala.

Vice-President Jessica Alupo and the National Curriculum Development Centre (NCDC) launched The Winning Debate: Public Speaking Redefined written by Fredrick Musiimenta in Kampala on Saturday, December 7, 2024.

Speaking at the book launch at Nob View Hotel in Ntinda, Alupo called on the youth to actively participate in elite debates that address critical societal issues.

She emphasized that engaging in debates from a young age contributes to holistic human development.

Alupo’s message was delivered by higher education state minister John Chrysostom Muyingo.

“We must be at the forefront of advocacy for the rights and privileges of all, especially in Africa. Through debate, we learn tolerance and acceptance in instances where we become tactically challenged because the debate is basically about the argument,” Alupo said.

She added, “Debate also involves research and fact-finding to cast out doubt. Therefore, by taking part in a debate, you are killing two birds with one stone.”

Alupo praised Musiimenta for writing a book which she said highlights the transformative power of effective communication skills in shaping future leaders.

Approved
by the NCDC, the book is designed to promote a culture of debate among learners and the general public across the country and the region.

“I am confident that the wisdom shared within these pages will inspire and empower leaders to embrace the art of debate and public speaking,” Alupo remarked.

Fredrick Musiimenta noted the book's relevance, stating that many students struggle to sustain meaningful conversations due to a lack of confidence and limited use of English as a medium of communication in schools.

“The book guides anyone interested in debating. It is structured to capture the reader’s attention while offering valuable insights,” Musiimenta said adding that “It briefly explores the history of debate in Uganda, debate formats, and techniques for mastering public speaking. It’s designed for both beginners and seasoned debaters competing at all levels.”

During the event, Muyingo also urged the youth to protect themselves against HIV/AIDS, particularly during the festive season.

This period, things like AIDS are very active. Be more aggressive against it. Take care of your lives and your families. Let's celebrate Christmas with everybody smiling,” he advised.
