The Karamoja sub-region is mourning the killing of one of its prominent Muslim clerics, gunned down by unknown men suspected to be warriors.

Sheikh Rashid Auni Haramazan, the former district Khadhi of Kotido and Moroto Muslim districts and a current member of the district service commission in Kaabong, was shot dead on September 8, 2025, under mysterious circumstances while working in one of the gold mines in the district.

At the time of his death, he was also a member of the general assembly of the Muslim Supreme Council.

Michael Longole, the Karamoja Regional Police Spokesperson, said security agencies were pursuing the suspects.

Family members told New Vision that the Sheikh was killed in a brutal attack by unknown gunmen along the Nakapel Gold site on his way to Lokanoyana on the fateful morning.

Abdi Rashid Loleny, a friend of the deceased, praised his service to the community. “His tragic death, occurring just days ago while he was working for his family at the gold mine in Kaabong, has left a void that will be deeply felt by all who knew him.”

Locals described Sheikh Auni as not only a distinguished leader within the Muslim community but also as someone who played a vital role in promoting unity and understanding across Kaabong district and beyond.

“His unwavering dedication to public service and tireless efforts to uplift those around him have left an invaluable legacy. His passion for community development and empowerment inspired many, and his presence will be sorely missed,” said Mark Sagal Abuku Lowany, a prominent Karamoja leader.

“During this painful time, we urge the people of Kaabong to come together in prayer for Auni's family, relatives, and in-laws. Let us offer our support and love to them as they navigate this challenging period. May we all find solace in knowing that God, the giver and the taker of life, holds Auni in His embrace. As we mourn the loss of a remarkable leader and a cherished friend, we reflect on the memories and contributions he made to our community and our nation,” Lowany added.

He said Auni’s spirit would forever remain in their hearts and pledged to honour his legacy by continuing the good work he championed.
